OK, if you are like me and can’t justify spending $150-$250 on , this is your best bet. With a little work, it can be improved to be a prop any Trekker would be proud of.First, grab one of these:Then grab a screwdriver and disassemble this puppy. The 4 large screws on the back are captive, so you have no fear of losing them. The interior screws. once you get to the battery compartment, have a remarkable ability to transport themselves off to places unknown, so be careful!Once you are in the “non-user-servicable” parts of the communicator, you’ll want to take the antenna out and go give it at least three light coats of the above “18K” paint. For perfectionists, you’ll also want to mask off the tiny speaker grille on the silver plate inside the communicator (the part with the buttons) and paint this gold as well. While you wait for the paint to dry, remove the circuit board and cut trace J2.(It may have a label reading “bronze” nearby.)This is an easter egg that will enable everyone’s favorite Star Trek TOS quote from Mr. Spock, “Your signal is very weak, can you turn up your gain?”No? Just me, then? There is no downside to enabling it, why not?Once your paint is dry, reassemble the device. Be sure to test the rotating Moire pattern before you close up. It you tighten the interior screws too much, it will not spin. Since most of the interior is devoted to spinning the Moire pattern, this would be a shame.(I keep meaning to see if there is room for a hard drive magnet in the upper back of the thing, that would allow you to attach it to a belt without the screen-accurate-but-not-in-universe-accurate Velcro. Up to you.)At this point, you should have a prop that looks better than many of the ones they used on screen.Enjoy!Live long and prosper!

I ordered two, one for my husband and one for myself. They look realistic and fun to work. The only complaint is that on one, the motorized spin wheel not working and on the other the hailing frequency feature not working. However good enough to keep as is. I don’t want to wait to return because would take too long in the pandemic. We have been watching original star trek remastered episodes and decided to order these for a but of fun.

The media could not be loaded. Â I love my classic Star Trek: TOS communicator! This looks exactly like from the television series and very accurate. I love how it let’s you do the Kirk flip and the sounds are straight from the show. You can even listen to the voices from the characters themselves, like Uhura, Scott, and including both Spock and Kirk. The lights on the communicator is a good touch to it and bright. The rotating array does spin which makes it feel like you have the actual communicator. There is also a function where you press the left button and a red light will flash; when you have the communicator closed and wait for a few seconds the call sound will operate and once you open the device Spock will answer you. The only downside to it is that of the grill is plastic, but I understand why they didn’t go through this if you want to do the flip.Overall, this is one good item to have in your collection or just to play around when watching any of the Star Trek series or movies.

I bought this for myself and ended up giving it to my mom because she’s an even bigger TOS fan than I am and I knew she’d love it. The top opens easily with a flick of the wrist, and the sounds are something right out of the show. The pre-programmed phrases from the original cast are a great bonus, and the fact that you can make it “call” you got a grin every time.

Product was shipped in a bag so box was damaged. Bags are ok for some items but NOT for collectibles. Lights and voice worked properly but the sound quality wasn’t great. The spinning moire looked cool but not worth the buzzing and clicking noise of the motor. The build quality was so-so. Overall, I prefer my old Playmates communicator to this one, especially since it cost half the price.

I can’t play with my Wand Company models now since they’re worth so much so I just got this one to play around with. Yes I’m an adult, but I’m still a kid at heart! Decent model for the money. Moire rotates and has standard sound effects. The grill definitely needs to be worked on. Other than that I’m happy with it.

This Diamond Select Communicator replica for Star Trek is a wonderful piece. It looks almost exactly like the ’working’ communicator from the original series. The lights and sound are good ( though a bit loud), but the best part is the swirling display that had been seen in the series. Great piece!

Unbelievable! I was a fan of the series as a teenager… went to Star Trek conventions with my father at nearby colleges. I took all my models that I always adapted to try and look like the real thing but nothing as accurate as this. I love it.
